Is The Character Darren On Animal Kingdom Really Gay

[Spoiler Alarm: Do not read ahead unless you've watched "Cry Havoc," Tuesday's episode of Animal Kingdom. Major plot points and spoilers discussed ahead.]

The Codys should only alter their last name to problem since it always finds them—or, as is often the instance, they stir information technology up on their own.

Case in point: In "Cry Havoc," Tuesday'due south episode of Animal Kingdom, Smurf's (Ellen Barkin) dealings concluded upwardly inadvertently spelling big trouble for J (Finn Cole) and Nicky (Molly Gordon) at the hands of a vengeful Javi (Alex Meraz). What happens next is sure to pull the entire family back on the aforementioned page, which should make for proficient dramatic Goggle box, since Baz (Scott Speedman), Pope (Shawn Hatosy), Craig (Ben Robson) and Deran (Jake Weary) have all fabricated a full-bodied endeavor to step away from Smurf.

Weary talked with us almost this calendar week's big episode, and, yep, the field of study of Deran's lack of a dearest life then far in Season 2 was part of the chat. (You're welcome). Let's encounter what he had to say about this episode and what's coming side by side.

A few episodes back, Deran told Smurf that he's gay. It was not your typical coming out scene, for sure, simply how was that for y'all to shoot?
Jake Weary:
That was very intense for me. Especially working with Ellen, both of usa actually wanted to brand this special and but really stick to the root of these people and exist as true as possible to these people and find the humanity inside the chaos. When you become fabric like this that is so important, you actually want to be equally grounded equally possible, and I recall that was the big claiming.

For Deran, I don't even call back he was planning on coming out to her in that verbal moment. It was just all that pent-up frustration and anger towards her, and somewhat a picayune bit of self-loathing, too, in the fact that it's taken him so long to say this. That stems from his anger towards his mother, too, and the fact that she's never been there for him. Whether it's a matter of her having known the whole fourth dimension, it hurt. Information technology hurts him that perchance she's known this whole time and has never come forward to him or tried to support him or talk to him about it.

In this calendar week's episode, Deran goes to a community coming together and is asked to exit some money, which of course he refuses to do. Safe to say that'southward going to atomic number 82 to some problem?
Definitely. This is all part of Deran becoming a man. Information technology's putting his big-boy shoes on and that comes out in spurts, only there are sure things that you accept to practise when honing a business that he doesn't necessarily feel like he has to practice, and information technology'south going to have repercussions. It'due south all a learning process for him. At the end of the day, he'due south still a pretty stubborn guy. This bar is like his baby, so when someone's telling him how to run his ain business, he'south going to exist brash about it.

In that location'due south a scene where the Cody boys are wanting to set upward a scheme in the bar and Deran apartment out tells them no. Is that going to become more and more difficult for him with his family?
Definitely. We're going to attain a crossroads at a point in the season where Deran really has to figure out what he really wants. Does he want to remain in this life and still be a role of his family unit, or is he going to, you know, go AWOL and do his ain thing? So it'due south this kind of balancing human action—or can he exercise both? It's his coming-of-age story, and he's simply trying to effigy out what he really needs and wants. It's not easy having a bunch of older brothers bearing downwardly on you and telling yous what you need to practise. I think that'south the hardest part, too, is that he's not hands persuaded, but he's hands manipulated by love. At the cease of the day, they're family, and these are his people, and these are his brothers that he actually does dearest. It'll be really interesting to run into where information technology goes.

Animal Kingdom

(L-R): Ben Robson, Scott Speedman and Jake Weary during Season one of Animal Kingdom (TNT)

Safe to say that with all the problem Javi has brought to the family by roughing upward J that Deran volition be pulled into that drama soon?
Yeah. Because J is involved in this, it has become a family unit thing, and it is an exterior threat to the family. Usually those types of things bring the family together, so Deran will become involved in trying to effigy out how to deal with the state of affairs and how to effort and figure out what to exercise with Javi and how to protect the family unit. And now that J has become a member of this family, they're too trying to protect themselves, too. There can't be any loose ends.

What'due south up with Deran's love life? We oasis't seen too much this flavor, but are things going to start heating up?
I know I feel similar a lot of people on Twitter have been similar, 'This guy needs to get laid! Why hasn't he fallen in beloved nevertheless? What's going on with Adrian?' [laughs] This bar has taken up a lot of his mental capacity, merely I recollect now that he'due south come up out to his female parent, you could say a weight has been lifted from his shoulders, and that'due south definitely going to come into play. Y'all're going to see Deran finally simply having fun and enjoying himself and calling the shots. And just experimenting and simply having fun with who he is and his sexuality. That will come into play, so don't worry, information technology'due south coming. He can't just be a responsible property owner all the time. You'll see he definitely knows how to have a good time.

What do you think you learned from shooting Season 1 that actually helped you play Deran in Season 2?
Me as the actor was a little naïve in playing him in the beginning. Just because you lot really have to dive in and there's not a lot of material, and even the writers are discovering the character as it's going along, and you're helping them mold this character into something that kind of takes shape over time. Then for me, I recollect going into Season ii I had a better idea of who this person was, who this person is. And so it was a little more exciting coming into information technology and having a picayune bit of source material to piece of work with from the first flavor. It just makes information technology more than heady.

Also, with Season 2, there'due south just a lot more than for me to exercise. I retrieve there's this newfound responsibility with Deran, and he's trying to exist responsible, finally, and be his own person. He's trying to suspension away, so I think that was the actually exciting part because I had an thought that this was coming. In the back of my mind I e'er knew Darren had the gall to break away from Smurf, and I think he's the only one with that capability, for obvious reasons. And I was just waiting for them to put that into the script, where he develops in the storyline. I was anxiously rubbing my hands together like, 'Aye, what are they going to come up with? I tin can't wait.'
